OTEC Installs New Transformer in John Day

On June 19th, Engineers from OTEC installed a new transformer at the cost of nearly $700,000 at the West John Day Substation. The new transformer replaces a bank of transformers originally built in 1947. OTEC Systems Engineer Charlie Tracy said, “the new transformer will ensure reliable service for the John Day area and is an important upgrade to the OTEC transmission system in Grant County”. Installing an entirely new transformer is a relatively rare occurrence for OTEC. Careful and extensive testing had determined that the existing transformer was nearing the end of its effective use and needed to be replaced. OTEC, as a non-profit cooperative, continuously strives to keep costs low for its member owners and get the maximum effective life out of all equipment.
