OTEC Offers Educational Trip to DC for 4 High School Juniors

November 30, 2009 – Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative (OTEC) is pleased to announce the continuation of its participation in the national “Youth Tour” program.

OTEC is offering the opportunity for four (4) high school juniors to attend the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. June 11 through June 18.

Steve Schauer, OTEC Members Services Manager, said, “OTEC is once again committed to offering this meaningful opportunity.  One student from each of our 4 districts will have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. and learn first hand how government operates.”

Eligibility requirements for the Youth Tour are:

  • Applicant or parents of the applicant must actively receive electrical service from OTEC.
  • Applicant must be a high school junior.
  • One student will be selected from each of the 4 OTEC districts.

Those selected for the Youth Tour will receive an all-expense paid chaperoned trip to Washington, D.C. where students from all around the United States will gather to learn about government.  “To be selected as a Youth Tour participant is an honor, and a very valuable life experience,” explains Schauer.

Those interested in applying for the OTEC Youth Tour should visit their high school guidance counselor or the local OTEC office.  The deadline for application is January 20, 2010.

The NRECA Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington, D.C. every June since the late 1950’s and has seen over 40,000 students from rural areas and small towns across America participate.  This will mark the fourth year of OTEC’s participation in the national youth tour.

Additional information, including video and audio clips of past OTEC youth tour participants is available on OTEC’s Facebook page and by clicking here.
