OTECC Writer named “Ruralite Writer of the Year”
Baker City, OR – November 13, 2008 – Oregon Trail Electric Consumers Cooperative (OTECC) is proud to announce that Ms. Lee Farren was named “Ruralite’s 2008 Writer of the Year.”
Farren is a frequent contributor to the OTECC edition of Ruralite magazine, focusing on members and stories from Union and Grant counties. Steve Schauer, Manager of Member Services, said, “With such a large territory to cover, having writers of the quality OTECC works with is especially gratifying. Lee has a knack for finding the story within the story and really highlighting the people and places in OTECC’s service territory.”
Farren was humbled to receive this recognition. "I'm familiar with the work of previous Ruralite writers of the year, and I was surprised and honored to find myself in their company. Writing profiles of OTECC members is especially enjoyable because they have such a variety of backgrounds and interests."
In 2008, Farren wrote three features for the OTECC edition: June 2008, “The Science of Agriculture;” September 2008, “The Big Picture;” and, October 2008, “Perfect Pitch.”
"Lee has a knack for finding and developing stories in some of the most remote areas of Oregon," said Ruralite Associate Editor Mike Federman, who coordinates production of the OTECC edition of Ruralite. "She concentrates on the human element, giving weight to a subject's skills and experiences without losing the individuality that makes the person interesting in the first place."
This is the third “Ruralite Writer of the Year” honor for an OTECC writer in the past 5 years. Debby Schoeningh, who focuses on Baker County, was honored with the award in 2004 and 2006 as well.
Ruralite Services is a not-for-profit cooperative corporation formed more than 50 years ago. It serves the communications needs of 54 consumer-owned electric utilities in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. OTECC’s Ruralite magazine is distributed monthly to all members in the OTECC service territory.
